It was in 1981 that a decision was taken to “name” each Hole and advice was sought from Jim Middleton who was so familiar with the area. In the minutes of the March Council Meeting, his suggestions are noted, and approved. Strangely two names were proposed for the 8th, “The Flagpole” or “Bird Island”. There is no obvious reason for the first name but the second “Bird Island” which can be clearly seen from the Tee, was chosen. One of the joys of a nine-hole Course is that having negotiated it once__ it must be repeated, many have thought it will be easier the second time, to their surprise and disappointment. The nine holes are fitted neatly into the available ground, and although various changes have been made and, no doubt will continue to be made, for such is the nature of a Golf Course, it remains largely as William Robinson first envisaged it. Although many felt that the natural beauty of the Course could not be improved it was decided in 1997 to create flowerbeds and various areas were selected for planting. Some of these areas in turn were further enhanced by stonewalls much in keeping with the surroundings and indeed reflecting back to earlier days when the Island was criss-crossed by such walls. These additions have added greatly to the appearance and presentation of the Golf Course especially in the area surrounding the Clubhouse and the approach to the First Tee.
